77 year old inmate dies in Brunswick County Jail

A 77 year old man in jail for a probation violation was found dead in his cell Tuesday night.

According to a press release, a Brunswick County Detention Officer observed around 10:30 p.m. that Collis Hewett was unresponsive in his cell.

EMS was notified, and Hewett was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had been confined in the Brunswick County Detention Facility since September 14th, 2009 for a probation violation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in Jacksonville NC.

A death investigation is being conducted by the Brunswick County Sheriffs Office Major Crimes unit and the Office of Professional standards.
