A jury has been selected in the trial of a Lake City man accused in a 2008 slaying.
Christopher Jones is on trial for murder in the death of Ronald Powell Jr. of Coward. Jones is accused of shooting and killng Powell on April 12, 2008, on Eugene Street in Lake City.
At the time, Jones was 17 years old. He is being tried as an adult.
The jury in the Jones trial is slated to be sworn about 2:30 p.m., and opening statements will follow.
Deputies also arrested 18-year-old Champeill Burgess on murder charges. Deputies said he was with Jones at the time of the murder.
“Well you know it’s important that the family has closure in this incident, and it’s a terrible tragedy that’s happened. I hope that this sends a message to those who commit these type things that we’re going to go after them very aggressively and also give the family closure, which they deserve,“ Boone said in 2008.
Both Jones and Burgess are from Lake City.
Twelfth Circuit Solicitor Ed Clements III is prosecuting the case with At-Large Circuit Court Judge Thomas A. Russo presiding.
