MYRTLE BEACH - Thousands of South Carolinians are heading to the water's edge this weekend to clean up litter and debris.
The state's annual Beach and River Sweep is today. It's sponsored by the state sea Grant Consortium and the Department of Natural Resources.
Each September, thousands of South Carolinians volunteer to clear trash from beaches, rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps. Last year over 5,500 volunteers removed 60 tons of debris.
In Myrtle Beach, organizers will gather at 9th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard. Ripley's Believe It Or Not! Museum is hosting the Beach Sweep from 9 a.m. until Noon.
Supplies for the clean-up, as well as doughnuts and bottled water will be provided.
In addition, 700 Boy Scouts from Rock Hill will help clean beaches near Myrtle Beach State Park.
Since the first sweep in 1988, more than 1,000 tons of trash have been collected from the state's rivers and beaches.
