The Darlington County Relay for Life Kick-Off was held Tuesday evening at the Lakeview Club in Hartsville. In keeping with the theme of A Day at the Beach, organizers and some team members dressed in beach attire and enjoyed beach music while they ate and socialized. Teams were able to participate in early registration and pick up fund-raising information.

“What the American Cancer Society has accomplished over the last 25 years, thanks to the efforts of Relayers is nothing short of remarkable,” said Beth Johnson of the American Cancer Society. Last year they celebrated 25 years of Relay for Life.

Statistics show that with the help of Relay contributions, there has been 14 percent decrease in the cancer death rate since the early 1990s.

“Think about the next 25 years,” Johnson said. “How many more lives will be saved and changed thanks to the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life?”

Relay for Life 2010 will be April 23 and 24 at Byerly Park in Hartsville. The goal is to raise $178,500 and increase team participation to 50 teams. Other goals include having 750 individual participants and 250 survivors.

Last year’s fund-raising raised $172,761 and saw 45 teams participate with 243 survivors.

Chairman for Relay for Life 2010 is Bob Morehead. Co-chair is Sarah Milbee. Edna Sims and Evelyn Dampier continue as survivor co-chairs.

The American Cancer Society has answered nearly one million calls a year from people facing cancer at 1-800-ACS-2345, a phone line that’s available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They have successfully advocated for smoke-free laws that now cover 60 percent of Americans. They have also launched a clinical trails matching service at www.cancer.org that connects cancer patients with more than 64,000 different treatment options.
