CONWAY -- Horry County Police said Wednesday that leads in a year-old shooting death have gone cold. Almost exactly a year ago someone shot and killed Kelly Joe Elliott in his own home near Loris.
It happened on September 14, 2008 and so far, there have been no arrests or even a suspect. Elliott lived on Dew Lane in the Long Point community, south of Loris.
Police said that Elliott’s family members hope a $5,000 reward will help generate new information.
Lt. Jamie DeBari with the department said that the crime scene looked like someone forced their way into Elliot’s home.
They say it seemed like there was a lot of struggle before he was shot and killed.
DeBari said investigators and detectives are not ruling out any possibility as to whether the victim knew the suspect or if there was a possible motive.
He said there are still no leads or witnesses in the case.
Elliott has no close relatives or children that live near by. DeBari said he lived by himself and had a very small circle of friends.
He said that it was a couple of those friends that called police.
"Two friends had gone into the house, they hadn't seen him in a few days they went in there and they saw damage to the back door,” explained DeBari, “they looked through a window and seeing that things weren't right they initially called 911, uniformed officers arrived, went in and checked the residence and found the victim."
News 13 tried to contact those friends but they didn't want to talk to the media.
DeBari said that because this is the one year anniversary since the killing happened, they wanted to get more attention on it, in hopes that someone who might know something about this case but was afraid before would come forward now.
Call the Horry County Police Department at 915-5350 or 915-TIPS (8477) if you or someone you know has any information about this case.
