Easterling Primary School has been selected as one of 51 public elementary schools statewide for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant.
The grant awarded districts are sharing $1.2 million in grant funding provided by the State Department of Education’s Office of School Food Services and Nutrition and the State Department of Agriculture.
Easterling Primary is purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers with grant funds to provide students with free healthy snacks daily.
The program also includes nutrition education with an emphasis on the importance of including fresh fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to provide our students with healthy snacks. Our goal is to encourage healthier food choices at an early age, and the development life-long healthy eating habits.” Angie Grice, Easterling Primary School principal said.
