Using one's gifts and talents to help children in need has been a labor of love for everyone involved with the Plant a Seed of Hope campaign.
The Durant Children's Center and Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault have joined forces to create a satellite facility in Hartsville at 510 W. Carolina Ave. The office will provide greater access to services offered for victims of child abuse and neglect in our area. The two organizations serve children from Darlington, Chesterfield and Marlboro counties.
"We are amazed and in awe of how the community has come together to support the Plant a Seed of Hope campaign, not only through their financial resources and gifts, but also through donating time and volunteering in many ways," said Pat West, co-chair of the Plant a Seed of Hope campaign.
The Hartsville center has been undergoing a total transformation throughout the summer with help from many organizations, civic groups and business owners. The freshly painted white house was planned to be a source of comfort for children that enter the doors, and every detail was planned carefully. A mural on the ceiling of the examining room was one of those special touches that would allow children something pleasant and restful to view during a stage in their journey to wellness.
Jessie Avant Smith, artist and owner of The Midnight Rooster, and her friend Rachel Milbauer- Riner painted the mural. In keeping with the soft green lemon verbena of the walls, Smith was inspired by the heart shaped leaf of the resilient pythos ivy plant.
"It was painted with much love," said Smith.
The Plant a Seed of Hope Campaign is working to raise $200,000 for the new center.
"We're only lacking $5,000 at this point,” said Boardmember Danielle Fassatt “We’re down to the final moments!"
The Open House for the Durant Center in Hartsville will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 15. Donations to complete the campaign may be made online at www.peedeecoalition.org/, or by contacting Marie Long or Ellen Hamilton at the Pee Dee Coalition at (843) 669-4694.
