Driver dies in Georgetown County crash

GEORGETOWN – One person died in a single-vehicle crash on US 17 south of Georgetown late Wednesday morning.

According to Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins, the driver was traveling south in a Jeep when the car ran off the road, the driver lost control and the car overturned.

The victim was identified as Mary Elizabeth Dawson, 69, of McClellanville, Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson said.

She was pronounced dead at an area hospital, he added.

She was wearing a seatbelt, Collins said.

The crash, which happened about 11 a.m., remains under investigation. An autopsy is set for Thursday morning, Johnson said.
