The company behind plans for a proposed landfill in Marlboro County has appealed the week-old decision by two county committees to ban the project.
On Sept. 1, Marlboro County Council and the county’s Planning Commission unanimously voted against a rezoning that would allow the controversial MRR Sandhills LLC landfill to be built in Wallace.
Now MRR officials have moved forward in appealing that decision, said Tom Wood, co-chairman of the group Citizens for Marlboro County, a local organization that adamantly opposes the project.
It is believed MRR started the appeals process before the county council or the planning commission announced its decisions, he said.
Last week, Citizens for Marlboro County members and other residents rejoiced after the bodies voted to prohibit the landfill from being built.
“It was just a site to behold. It was like the end of World War II. People were jumping and hugging each other,” said Belvin Sweatt chairman of the group.
The organization has been fighting the proposed project for about two years, he said.
Even after the Sept. 1 ruling, Marlboro County residents assumed that the fight would continue, Sweatt said.
Wood said the group plans to be present at the planning and zoning appeals hearing which is scheduled for Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Marlboro County Courthouse.
