MYRTLE BEACH -- Tuesday morning marked the first day of the rest of the year, one day after the unofficial end of summer: Labor Day.
But Tuesday was the beginning of new life in downtown Myrtle Beach, as city council members, planners, and other dignitaries official broke ground on the city's new $6 million boardwalk plan.
The 1.2 mile boardwalk and promenade is expected to be come the focal point for drawing more business and tourists to the city's ocean front between 2nd and 14th Avenues North.
"We're excited," said Mayor John Rhodes. "People go to the beach, they look for a boardwalk," he said.
Miles Crownover has been coming from his home in Lewistown, Pa. to Myrtle Beach for over 20 years.
"The only thing missing here was a board walk," said Crownover. "People like walking on the boardwalk, even if they don't to into any of the stores," he said.
The project is expected to be complete in time for next summer's busy tourist season.
