Tuesday, a new construction project will be underway on the Grand Strand. The official kick-off for construction of Myrtle Beach’s Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade project is at 11 a.m. at Plyler Park.
Marvin McHone, owner of Marvin's, on Ocean Boulevard, next to Plyler Park said the Boardwalk and Promenade project is a long time coming. McHone said he's been in business for 35 years and over that time he's heard a lot of talk about a boardwalk. And now that construction is about to start, he said he’s really excited and is even planning boardwalk specials.
Buz Plyler, whose father the park is named for said his family's been in business on Ocean Boulevard for more than 50 years. Plyler said during that time, he's seen a lot of things come and go that have had an impact on downtown businesses, like the Pavilion. Plyler said when the Pavilion left, he thought his business would decrease 40 percent, but to his surprise, he said it was only down 3 percent.
Plyler said the new Boardwalk and Promenade will be a welcome addition.
"For many, many years I’ve always had people ask, where's the boardwalk.”
Plyler said he hopes the boardwalk will bring more traffic downtown. He said years ago, most of the traffic was on what serves as the boardwalk now. Then it moved to Ocean Boulevard. Now, Plyler said people are slowly making their way back to the boardwalk.
He said he hopes the new boardwalk becomes one of the principle attractions in Myrtle Beach. "I would hope that we see more traffic in the off season as people come to see them build this and it will give them more to do in the off season.”
Plyler said the ocean will always be the number one attraction that brings people to Myrtle Beach, but hopes the Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade will likely be another addition to their to do list.
