It’s only a matter of time before voters head to the polls In November to decide who will be the new mayor in the City of Myrtle Beach.
With the seat up for grabs, current mayor John Rhodes will face off against a total four candidates.
Last Wednesday businessman Bill Howard said he’s running for office; adding that he can do a better job than current City Mayor John Rhodes.
"I listen well and I look at the future,” said Howard, "I will listen to the tax payers the people that pay the taxes is who we need to listen to."
Howard who has lived in the city for 35 years has been a hotel owner, a founding member of Beach First Bank, runs the Fish House restaurant on N. Kings Highway and is the co-owner of the Alabama Theater.
Howard also said he isn’t completely dissatisfied with the way Rhodes runs the city but that it needs more things like help for small business owners and attractions that can lure tourists back into town.
"I think I can take it to the next level, I don't know that he can but I think I've got the background that he doesn't have,” Howard said.
He said he understands how small business owners were affected after the city's new biker ordinances took effect last spring. However, he added that if elected mayor he will work on creating ways to reach a happy medium.
"I think the motorcycle issue did devastate Myrtle Beach a little bit, I support everything that they've done but I think there's a lot of tweaking to be done."
Howard also said that if the city wants to bring in even more tourists it needs to keep its one cent sales tax and the marketing that it pays for.
“It has its pros and cons,” explained Howard, “I’m for it, they need to make sure that every penny is spent the right way to give them something to put their teeth into to come to Myrtle Beach don't just advertise Myrtle Beach."
