Marion School District One high school students exhibited the highest overall increase in composite SAT scores compared with 18 other Pee Dee districts, based on analysis of the 2009 statewide data released by the SC State Department of Education.
MHS students showed an overall 150-point gain in SAT composite scores for 2009, with an average composite score of 1453, which is up from 1303 in 2008.
The SAT was redesigned four years ago to include a writing section, additional reading analysis, and increased rigor in math.
Students are assessed in the three areas of writing, math, and critical reading with possible score ranges from 200-800 for each subtest.
MSD 1 students ranked third among the Pee Dee districts for highest average composite score. Although South Carolina public school seniors’ average composite score was down six points and national average composite scores dropped two points, Marion High student scores defied state and national trends.
MHS students’ average composite score surpasses SC public school seniors’ average score of 1445.
The District’s average student composite score is below the national average of 1493. “ We are proud of the MHS students, faculty, and school leadership for this accomplishment,” Superintendent Michael D. Lupo said.
“We are seeking excellence in every aspect of the district and this level of improvement in SAT scores is certainly moving our students in that direction. We are very proud of our students’ efforts,” he added.
