The list of candidates vying for Myrtle Beach Mayor’s seat keeps growing.

A fifth candidate, Beatrice Catalano made her official announcement to throw her hat in the ring for city mayor at Ripley’s Believe it or Not Friday morning.

“It’s a sleepy town,” said Catalano, “I decided to run because I know what needs to be done here, there are no people on the boulevard, the hotels are hurting, the beachwear shops are hurting, and a lot of them are losing money because there’s no one here.”

Catalano said she has nothing against Mayor Rhodes for what has been happening with the city.

“He is a very good friend of mine, it’s not his fault, it all started before him and I’m saying I’m running because I really want to help Myrtle Beach and the citizens here,” said Catalano.

She said she wants to get rid of the city’s high sales taxes, clean up crime and bring back tourism.

"I think people pay enough taxes,” explained Catalano, “right now with the way the economy is I think we shouldn't have to tax them more money.”

Catalano said she doesn’t have anything against welcoming bikers either as long as they follow city laws.

Catalano is a native of Myrtle Beach. In addition to incumbent John Rhodes, she is up against former Myrtle Beach mayor Mark McBride and businessmen Keith Van Winkle and Bill Graham.
