»  Comments | Post a Comment

A 39-year-old man is dead after being hit by a train in Pembroke Tuesday night.

Authorities say Howard Ziegler of Pembroke was sitting near the track around 9:10 when a CSX freight train came through. The train’s conductor sounded the horn to alert him. The train initially missed him, but a step connected to the train hit him.

Ziegler was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, where he died.

The train was delayed about 50 minutes after the incident.

Authorities found a beer bottle at the scene. They have requested that an autopsy be performed on Ziegler’s body to determine if alcohol was in his system at the time he was hit.
