BENNETTSVILLE -- At a public meeting held Tuesday evening, both Marlboro County Council and the county's Planning Commission essentially voted unanimously against re-zoning for the controversial megadump in Wallace.
The meeting was held at the Marlboro County Courthouse in Bennettsville, where the planning commission met with residents to discuss plans of the landfill.
The vote Tuesday rejected a rural resource designation, which, if combined with a special permit, would allow a landfill in the area.
Belvin Sweatt, chairman of Citizens for Marlboro County, said council members did not plan on voting at the hearing, but went ahead with their vote once the planning commission voted.
Everyone who spoke at the public meeting opposes the landfill being in Wallace. "It was just a site to behold. It was like the end of World War II. People were jumping and hugging each other," Sweatt said. That excitement came moments after the final votes rejecting the re-zoning were in.
A source told The Morning News that MRR Sandhills, LLC, the company proposing the landfill, can pursue legal action against Marlboro County for two reasons. The first being that the county changed its solid waste plan at the last minute. The second reason being that MRR Sandhills has a vested interest in the county, since it spent money conducting tests for the proposed megadump.
