Soccer
The Coker women’s soccer team opened their season on a rough note Thursday night. The Lady Cobras fell to Newberry College 4-1. Sarah Kinsey (Windermere, Fla.) scored the lone goal with an assist from Ashley Meador (Union, S.C.). Despite allowing four goals, Coker goalkeeper Carrie Hudnell (Goose Creek, S.C.) made nine saves in her first collegiate start.

The Lady Cobras also lost a tough match on Sunday afternoon to the Chowan University Hawks 2-1 with a goal late in the second half. The loss drops the Lady Cobras to 0-2 after their first week of play, starting this season the same way they ended last season, giving the Coker women 13 straight losses dating back to Oct. 1 of last year. The Lady Cobras return to the field 7 p.m. Thursday when they host the Bulldogs of Wingate University.

The Coker men's soccer team ended their first week of play with a 2-0 record thanks to a dominating 8-0 win over Chowan University on Sunday afternoon and a 2-1 win over the UNC-Pembroke Braves on Thursday.

Freshman Eric Stiefield (Eustis, Fla.) scored both of Coker’s goals, while Enrique Barrientos (Plano, Texas) gave Stiefield the opportunity to score, assisting on both goals in the Pembroke game. It was a hard fought match, with a total of 30 fouls, seven yellow cards and a red card. Goalkeeper James Sweeney (Huntingtown, Md.) earned the second win of his collegiate career and his first shutout in the victory during the Chowan game.

The team returns to action 4 p.m. today as they travel to North Greenville.

Volleyball
The Lady Cobras volleyball team went 1-1 in the second day of the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday. Coker opened the day with a 3-0 win over Fayetteville State, with scores of 25-20, 28-26 and 25-17. However, in the Lady Cobras afternoon match against Wingate, they lost 3-0 with scores of 25-5, 25-10 and 25-20. After their first weekend of play, the Coker volleyball team returns home with record of 1-3. Leading the Lady Cobras in their match against Fayetteville State was April Griggs (Bishopville, S.C.) with seven kills, four aces and three blocks, while Cynallyhia Indriago (Columbia, S.C.) had six kills and 10 digs.

The Lady Cobras return to action in a week when they travel to Gaffney to face Limestone College in their first Conference Carolinas match of the season at 3 p.m. on Friday.
