DARLINGTON - Rain did not deter high school football fans on Friday night, and the Red Foxes did not disappoint, defeating their cross county rivals the Darlington Falcons 31-14 in Darlington.
An early touchdown in the first quarter set the tone for the night, and the Red Foxes led 7-0 heading into the second quarter.
With 7:12 left in the half, the Red Foxes sacked Darlington quarterback Damien Debose, forcing the Falcons to punt again and giving Hartsville the ball at the 15.
On third and 10, Eric Williams took the ball along the sideline and broke away for an 85-yard touchdown to give Hartsville a 14-0 lead.
A kickoff that went out of bounds gave Darlingon the ball at its 35, and the Falcons scored on a Demario Goodson touchdown to cut Hartsville’s lead to 14-7.
Hartsville started its next drive at its own 36 and finished it off when Dre Scott ran it in from 2 yards out with 32 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Hartsville led 21-7 at halftime.
Darlington answered on the first possession of the second half. Starting at their own 38, the Falcons moved 62 yards. Debose scrambled in from 15 yards out to make it 21-14.
The Falcons then thwarted Hartsville’s scoring effort by recovering a fumble at Darlington’s 9-yard line, but the Red Foxes returned the favor, and Jacob Cole scored on a fumble recovery to go up 28-14 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter.
Teal Davis added a short field goal for the Red Foxes in the fourth quarter to make it 31-14.
“The boys played extremely hard against a tough Darlington team,” said Head Coach Jeff Calabrese. “I am very proud of their effort tonight.”
