HEMINGWAY—When members of the red hot Hemingway Tigers football team aren’t lighting up scoreboards around the state, they try to make a positive impact within the community. That’s why every Friday morning during the season you’ll find a Tiger at Hemingway Elementary School, mentoring the cubs.
It’s a part of the Mentor Reading Program, an initiative organized by HES guidance counselor Marty Avant. Avant, who also works as defensive coordinator for the varsity team, selects four seniors every week to come read to students, 5K up to the second grade. The program allows students the opportunity to meet and interact with the local athletes, sometimes teaching them a thing or two about their daily activities.
