HEMINGWAY— This December, the University of South Carolina Press will publish the much-anticipated new edition of “The Boykin Spaniel: South Carolina’s Dog” by Mike Creel and his fellow breed enthusiast, Lynn Kelley.
Written for all lovers of the Palmetto State’s famous little brown sporting dog, this heavily illustrated book summarizes the Boykin’s history, distinctive personality and sterling abilities.

The book also includes a collection of anecdotes and memories from a distinguished cast of trainers, breeders and owners.

Kitty Beard, cofounder and past president of the Boykin Spaniel Society, has previewed the new edition. She says, “Only devoted owners of this little brown dog could have crafted such a masterpiece. This is a must-have reference for every Boykin spaniel owner and is essential reading for anyone considering getting a Boykin.”

Former South Carolina Governor Dick Riley, who in 1985 signed the law making the Boykin Spaniel our official state dog, says, “Creel and Kelly expertly tell the story of the Boykin as well as the stories and recollections of those who have made South Carolina’s dog increasingly popular around the world. The Boykin Spaniel is a book well worth retrieving.”

In a telephone interview last week, Creel said he has completely rewritten the revised edition of the book “The Boykin Spaniel, South Carolina’s Dog”. Based on an article he authored in Wildlife in 1975 an organization was formed to protect the breed, without which the breed would not be lasting as known.

The new book, entirely rewritten, provides more detail, bibliography, with a chapter on art concerning painting and sculpting. It also has the complete field trial records from 1980 forward to date as well as the National field trial records.
The book of 240 pages with 35 color and 51 black and white illustrations will be available in December in both paperback and hard cover.

A native of Hemingway, Creel is a graduate of Hemingway High School and the University of South Carolina with a degree in journalism. He previously worked for the South Carolina Pollution Control Authority and retired from the South Carolina Wildlife Magazine. He enjoys his retirement by raising rare plants and as a freelance writer and photographer, still contributing regularly to the S.C. Wildlife Magazine. Mike is the son of Laura Allen Creel and the late L. E. Creel, Jr.
