HEMINGWAY—Building and Construction students at Hemingway Career and Technology Center participated in a project with Honda of South Carolina that increased their awareness of the importance of Wildlife Conservation. Students assembled forty birdhouses and four duck boxes for this project. Honda provided necessary materials for students to complete this project. Honda also t-shirts to students, and invited them to tour their plant to observe the positive impact their project has on wildlife habitat on the corporation’s property.
For the past three years, Honda associates have worked diligently to aid in creating a plan to enhance the lives of wildlife living on their property. Associates designed and constructed a Butterfly Garden, constructed a “Carolina Fence”, and will place bird houses and duck boxes on the property to impact the environment through habitat preservation. Since the onset of the company’s involvement with Wildlife and Industry Together (W.A.I.T.), executives at Honda have observed that associates are very concerned about the environment, and are committed to protecting and educating others of its importance. Mr. Jeff Helton, Assistant Vice President of Honda of South Carolina, is pleased with the progress that Honda associates have made, and encourages students to continue to value the environment. Mr. Helton also shared how their involvement with wildlife preservation has reemphasized, to all Honda associates, that helping to save the environment is everybody’s business.
“Participating in this project gave the Building Construction students a sense of pride knowing that being from a rural community they were able to give back to the community,” said Assistant Principal, Mr. Brian McKnight.
Hemingway Career and Technology Center students are hopeful that they will be able to find additional ways that they can become involved in wildlife preservation projects.
