Guardians partner with Habitat for Humanity

GEORGETOWN, S.C. – Guardians from Coast Guard Station Georgetown, S.C., recently volunteered their services to help Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty, housing and homelessness with a construction project Oct. 6, 2009.

The Coast Guard men and women from Station Georgetown assisted the charitable organization in a housing construction project, which included installing vinyl siding, soffit or eaves and framing. The Guardians arrived at 8 a.m. and worked until they had completely sided the house, framed the front porch, and re-leveled the landscape around the foundation.
The driving force behind the project was Petty Officer 3rd Class Jeremy Fisher who organized the project by seeking other volunteers. Fisher received an overwhelming response of able bodied Guardians wanting to participate in this worthy cause.

"I wanted to volunteer in the community during the slow operational part of the year," said Fisher. "I thought it would be nice to give something back to the community we live and work in."
On Sept. 11, 2009, Station Georgetown received a request to help with this project. All in all, the volunteers spent more than 100 hours on this project. The mission was a great success and Station Georgetown will also be providing volunteer crews for upcoming construction projects.
