HEMINGWAY—The Hemingway-Johnsonville Garden Club held its October meeting in the New Town Park where they planted two white crepe myrtles in memory of two of their members who passed away this summer, Rebecca Lewis and Rebecca Venters, longtime Hemingway residents and garden club members.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Cub Scouts of Troop 184 presented the Flag and the group sang the National Anthem.
Mrs. L. H. Cribb read the lovely old poem, Trees, by Joyce Kilmer.
The Reverend Milton McGuirt, pastor of Hemingway First United Methodist Church, gave a short devotional, using Psalm 8. He reminded those present that both Beckys were true planters, not only of natural flowering things, but as teachers, they planted seeds in the hearts and lives of children that will live on and bear fruit in days to come. Each of them had long and illustrious careers as elementary teachers both in the Hemingway and Johnsonville Schools.
Light refreshments were served in the gazebo, which was centered with a table arrangement of natural greens and flowers arranged by Patti Newell Harwell. Patti used an old urn belonging to her sister, Dayne Coker, both granddaughters of a former Garden Club member, the late Sadie Anderson, thereby recognizing yet a third member of the club and the talents she left to her family.
