FLORENCE — A cooking demonstration and guest speakers will be featured during the McLeod Diabetes Center’s 2009 Diabetes Health Fair.

The free event, in its 11th year, will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 at McLeod Medical Plaza, 800 E. Cheves St., Florence.

Blood sugar, blood pressure and eye screenings will be conducted during the event. In addition, there will be foot checks, oral hygiene information and diabetes related nutrition and medication information. Participants who bring their glucose monitors will have the opportunity for staff to change the monitor’s clock to reflect daylight-savings time.

Many diabetes vendors will be present, and everyone who attends can register for door prizes.

McLeod Nutrition Services will give a breakfast cookingdemonstration at 10 a.m., followed by nationally known health author and speaker Jeannette Jordan, who will present “Small Lifestyle Changes Can Yield Big Health Results” at 11 a.m.

After lunch at noon, McLeod Health and Fitness Center Certified Personal Trainer Sandy Carlson will lead a lunchtime workout at 12:30 p.m. The event will conclude with a presentation by motivational speaker and A1C Champion Drew Rainwater at 1 p.m.

The McLeod Diabetes Center offers an extensive range of inpatient and outpatient services including diabetes self-management education, individual and group education classes, nutritional counseling and carbohydrate counting education, and exercise and weight management. The center, staffed by three Certified Diabetes Educators, also offers education in diabetes foot care, insulin self-administration and insulin pump training, training in home glucose monitoring, and stress and time management.

Diabetes self-management classes are offered weekly, and free support groups, open to anyone, take place the second Monday of each month (except November).

The McLeod Diabetes Center coordinates with McLeod Women’s Health Services to assist patients with Gestational Diabetes, or women who develop high blood sugar (glucose) levels during their pregnancy.

The center also has been recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association.

The McLeod Diabetes Center, funded in part by the McLeod Health Foundation, is located in McLeod Medical Park East, Suite 250, 901 E. Cheves St., Florence).
