The Hartsville Red Foxes boys’ and girls’ cross country teams finished fourth and sixth in the regional meet in Sumter on Oct. 21 against Carolina Forest, Conway, South Florence, Sumter and West Florence.
For the boys, Carolina Forest came out ahead with 32 points, Sumter in second with 51 followed by South Florence with 73, Hartsville with 112, West Florence with 113 and Conway with 175.
“This wasn’t one of our better races of the season,” said Coach Buster Freeman.
However, Allen Ownley earned All-Region honors by finishing in tenth place.
Hartsville runners were Allen Ownley in a time of 18:44 (10th place), Justin Steeves in 20:25 (22nd), Drew McCall in 20:44 (25th), Vance Odom in 21:04 (27th), Connor Ransome in 21:12 (28th), Luke Valle in 21:16 (29th) and Nick McMillin in 21:40 (31st).
The boys’ team record stands at 25-9.
For the girls, Sumter finished first with 22 points followed by West Florence and Carolina Forest both with 69 points, Conway with 96, South Florence with 112 and Hartsville with 135.
“It was the first time in five races we had a complete girls team,” Freeman said. “The girls ran very hard and will compete at the Lower State.”
Hartsville runners were Olivia Crabtree in a time of 24:09 (16th place), Erin Farrell in 24:37 (20th), Madison Hassler in 25:36 (28th), Margot Rogers in 30:41 (35th) and Laura Richie in 32:01 (36th).
The cross country teams will compete Saturday in the Lower State meet at James Island. In Lower State, the top six teams will advance to the state competition in Columbia on Nov. 7. Any runner who finishes in the top 20 runners and whose team does not qualify in the top six teams will advance to the state meet as an individual representing their home school.
