For the fourth straight year, McCormick Elementary School held a Student Council election.
Student Council consists of a president, vice president, and secretary. Those interested in running for president must be a current MES fifth grade student, have good grades in their current subjects and not have any discipline referrals. Those interested in running for vice president must be a current MES fourth grade student, have good grades in their current subjects and no discipline referrals.
This year the school changed the position for secretary, opening the position for third graders.
In addition to the Student Council are homeroom representatives. These students were elected in the classrooms and must also maintain good grades and not have any discipline referrals.
During the week of Sept. 14 – 17, students interested in running completed an application where they had to submit parental permission, sign a student contract, have their current homeroom teacher endorse their efforts and complete a one-hundred word essay. The sponsors collected the applications and read the essays. Based on their grades, teacher recommendations and an essay rubric, students were chosen to campaign.
On Sept. 21, the halls of the schools featured various campaign posters of the 15 students eligible for running in the election. Stickers were passed out to help candidates gain support. Interested candidates held rallies on the playground to gain support.
On Sept. 28 the participating candidates were aired on the MMS (Mustang Morning Show) reading their speeches. After the speeches were read, the students then voted on their candidate of choice. Votes were tallied, counted, and recounted.
The 2009 – 2010 student council Members are president Joslyn Smith, vice president Te’Asia Phillips and secretary Kiersten White.
Homeroom representatives are:
