When the time came to get a new heating and air conditioning system earlier this summer Jessica Tew and her husband Joshua decided to go green.
"I just kept thinking that there are so many sources of energy that aren't renewable, that aren't clean and this is something that i can do for my family and my children," says Jessica Tew.
The Tews worked with Carolina Cool to combine a super efficient heating and air conditioning system with solar panels. The solar system differs from traditional types of solar power.
"It starts up slow and ramps up slow and overall runs at lower amperage anyway, so that's really why it can run off the battery bank. it's a 48 volt inverter system," says Verlon Wulf owner of Carolina Cool.
The solar system is also connected to a web box that allows the Tews to see how much electricity they are making.
"I'm able to see on a minute to minute basis and able to track it over time to see what times a day i'm producing the most electricity, and then i adjust what electricity i'm using accordingly," says Jessica Tew.
Tew can see exactly how much energy her system is producing on sunny days versus cloudy days.
"We're actually getting into the time of year where my system will be working even better than it did this summer so we'll see what happens," she says.
The Tews also benefit from a separate system that takes energy from the sun to make hot water.
''It does such a good job and works so well and is such an energy saver that i would recommend it for anybody," she says.
Because she says it's one more step better the environment.
"You know what a good example to give my kids to do things not just for myself but betters the community," says Tew.
