Marker to be unveiled at Darlington cemetery

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington will have an unveiling and dedication of an historical marker at 5 p.m. Monday at the cemetery, at 405 S. Warley St.

The cemetery was organized in 1889. This year marks its 120th anniversary. It’s unclear how the cemetery got its name.

“We’ve looked through records at the cemetery office in addition to information filed at the Darlington County Historical Commission,” said Barbara Crosby, president of the Grove Hill board of directors. “We have found nothing recorded.”

Other board members are Willie Ervin, vice president; Marvin Lawson, treasurer; Dr. Bill Dubose, secretary; and Dot Johnson, director.

Grove Hill records show that the earliest burials took place around 1897. To date, more than 5,800 people have been laid to rest in the cemetery.

Additional property has been purchased throughout the years. Grove Hill now encompasses about 50 acres. The most recent purchase is the land the Christian Scientist Church once occupied.
