Chesterfield County citizen help catch car thieves

»  Comments | Post a Comment

For the past four months, Chesterfield County and the town of Cheraw have encountered 35 to 50 car break-ins. Many of the vehicles were unlocked and parked in the owner's driveways. Among the items confiscated were GPS devices, hand held devices, weapons, video games, DVDs, pocketbooks and wallets, according to the press release.

Departments throughout the count have been investigating the crimes by pinging of cell phones, tracking devices, riding at night, and interviewing suspect.

"I have been very concerned about the citizens of this county," said Sheriff Parker.

911 received a phone call from a citizen outside of the town limits in the Pleasant Hill community Thursday morning around 1:30. The caller was concerned that the lights inside his vehicle were on in his yard. As he went out to check his vehicle, he saw subjects getting into a small two-tone, red and gray Dodge Dakota. The truck was seen speeding away from a body shop across the street. County and local officials were informed and dispatched as surrounding agencies were notified via BOLO with the vehicle description.

The vehicle was identified by Lt. Sandy McCormick around 2:30 a.m. traveling on Powe St. in downtown Cheraw. When attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects sped up about 1,000 yards before stopping and running into a housing development. CCSO and Cheraw police officers began setting perimeters awaiting canine tracking assistance. Sgt. Eric Taylor and Capt. Keith Thomas arrived with canine officer Nike to begin tracking efforts. The suspects were captured as they were located under tarps in vehicles behind Reids Funeral Home by Thomas, 30 to 45 minutes later. The suspects were then taken into custody and booked at the Chesterfield County Detention Center.

Parker said, "On behalf of CCSO, thanks to the citizens for being alert and taking immediate action to notify officers. I'd also like to commend Lt Sandy McCormick and Cheraw Police Dept. for astute reactions and diligent response along with the investigative teams and Captain Thomas. County investigative team (Lt Brianna Davis, Sgt Wayne Jordan, and Corp. Daniel Scott), the CC tracking team, Major James Dixon and all members of the Sheriffs Office have also spent relentless hours riding off duty, interviewing suspects, following leads and notifying the public to solve these break-ins.

"Mostly I'd like to thank the citizens. I rely on the citizens who have supported the Sheriffs Office throughout my career. Because of the size of the SO, we rely on the citizens to notify us immediately of any suspicious behavior as soon as it occurs. Law Enforcement is no better than you allow it to be."
