FLORENCE — Florence-Darlington Technical College Instructor of Psychology Chris Thomas has won the Governor’s Professor of the Year honors from the S.C. Commission on Higher Education.
Thomas, a Hartsville resident, was nominated for the honor along with the top instructors from the state’s 15 other technical colleges.
S.C. Commission on Higher Education Commissioner Ken Wingate joined Florence-Darlington Tech President Dr. Charles Gould to make a surprise visit Wednesday to Thomas’ Psychology 105 class to notify Thomas that he had won.
“Chris exemplifies the quality in the classroom that our technical college students deserve,” Wingate said in a press release issued by the college. “It was important for us to come from Columbia and make this award to the instructor in front of his students, because they are what it’s all about.”
Thomas has worked at Florence-Darlington Tech since 1999. Before then, Thomas was an adjunct instructor of psychology at Horry-Georgetown Technical College and an instructor at the Francis Marion University Psychology Lab.
“We are all so proud of Chris for bringing this recognition to our college,” Gould said in the release.
Thomas earned his undergraduate in psychology at Coastal Carolina University and continued his education with a master’s degree from FMU. While working as a college instructor, Thomas worked as a counselor with Horry County mental health providers.
At Florence-Darlington Tech, Thomas serves as a sponsor of the Global Issues Club and has helped spearhead a campus wide recycling effort. He was named the college’s Instructor of the Year in 2008 and represented the college in the S.C. Technical Education Association’s Instructor of the Year.
