Andrea Richards loves her neighborhood.
She lives near the intersection of Maple Avenue, 4th Avenue South, and Broadway.
In fact, her neighbors recently voted Richards to be part of a new committee put together to examine ways to improve the neighborhoods around Withers Swash and 3rd Avenue South.
"I cant' tell you--I'm just very proud to be part of this project," Richards said.
The committee held its first meeting at Myrtle Beach City Hall on Wednesday morning. Consultants, city planners, environmental advocates, business leaders, and other residents started the process of figuring out how to best revitalize the commercial and residential districts along 3rd Avenue and near the waterways that feed the swash.
City planners and residents feel that helping strengthen the swash will not only make it a more appealing place to live, but the efforts could help sustain the surrounding area against the effects of future development.
If you would like more information, please contact Myrtle Beach Planning Director Jack Walker at 918-1075.
The city will host four future workshops at the Myrtle Beach Train Depot to receive input from groups within the Withers Swash area.
Those meeting times are:
- 4 p.m., Monday, November 2 – Environmental Impact Group
- 7 p.m., Monday, November 2 – Commercial Impact Group
- 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 4 – Governmental Impact Group
- 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 4 – Residential Impact Group
The advisory panel will meet once a month to get updates as consultants continue their work on the project, and receive the input from the community, and a final proposed plan could be presented in early 2010.
