As the investigation continues into to why a fight broke out between a student at Carolina Forest High School and the school’s resource officer, and police saying the student was shot and killed after stabbing the officer, students returned to class for the first time since the incident.
Authorities say 11th grader Trevor Varinecz stabbed Officer Marcus Rhodes and during the fight, the officer pulled his gun in self-defense and shot Varinecz, who was pronounced dead about an hour later, according to Coroner Robert Edge.
The images of blood flowing out of Rhodes's midsection and Varinecz being driven off in an ambulance are still lingering in 10th grader Heather Roy's mind.
“We saw Officer Rhodes as he was going into the ambulance. We saw him with all of his gauze on his stomach. We assumed that he had gotten stabbed, but we didn't know how, what, or by whom,” said Roy.
Roy was in the school's band room when the stabbing-shooting incident happened, leaving Verinacz dead.
Roy says she later found out what happened by reading stories posted on scnow.com
“Some people were upset that Trevor got shot and died. Some people were relieved that the situation didn't get more out of hand,” said Roy.
Roy says her friends and other students have been talking about the chaos on Friday, throughout the weekend. She thinks emotions will continue to run high when classes resume on Monday.
A teacher News 13 spoke to from the school, who asked not to be identified, says the faculty will be available to help the students cope with Friday's incident.
“I do feel we should talk about it but I don't think we need to dwell on it,” said Roy.
Roy says having conversations in class would be a productive way of helping people move on from the incident, as have discussions she's had with her parents.
