No public was present at a public hearing for the Myrtle Beach Terminal capacity Enhancement Program Thursday afternoon.
Officials with The Horry County Departments of Airports met at the Horry County Government building to get community input on the proposed Terminal Capacity Enhancement Program at the Myrtle Bach International Airport.
Project staff said the purpose was for the public to review Environmental Assessment document and the potential impacts of the proposed improvements.
Displays representing the proposed project were placed around the room.
Officials say the improvement are needed because the main structure and building enclosure do not meet 2006 International Building Code Wind and Seismic Life Safety Codes which would result in major upgrades if the terminal was renovated and expanded.
The terminal building is not designed for vertical expansion and major renovations and upgrades are needed to the electrical mechanical and plumbing systems of the terminal building as well as a major refurbishment of fixtures.
“No public just means that no one has a problem with this project, “ said Rick Ott Senior Executive Vice President with M.B. Kahn Construction, “Myrtle Beach Airport is the fastest growing airport in the state of South Carolina and we’ve had 60% growth in the last ten years and we anticipate that growth to continue but if you compare our facility with other commercial airports we have the smallest facility we have the least amount of parking and the least number of gate and even though we are the second largest airport in the state right now we just do not stack up very well against the other commercial airports in the state this project will go a long ways to making us compete more and allow more airlines to come in and service the market.”
Ott said the project will start within the next 60 to 90 days.
