The Huddle House restaurant in Hartsville is back in business with new owners, new management and what the owners say is a new emphasis on customer service.
Bob and Janie Robertson of Augusta acquired the restaurant at 904 S. Fifth St. and reopened it about four weeks ago following a complete renovation of the building, and the new owners say they couldn’t be happier with the customer and community response.
“I’ve been tickled to death with business,” said Bob Robertson, who with his wife Janie own 10 Huddle House restaurants, nine in South Carolina and one in Augusta, Ga., where they live.
“Business has just been wonderful. The people there have been wonderful to us. Everybody’s just been as nice as they can be.”
“That community has just been precious,” said Janie Robertson. “The customers there have been so nice and so appreciative of what we’ve done for that store.”
The Robertsons also recently purchased the Huddle House restaurant in Darlington and plan to reopen it soon after renovations and repairs there are complete.
At the Hartsville restaurant, the interior has been completely refurbished. The old counter is gone, replaced with new booths throughout the dining area.
In the next two to three weeks, new equipment, including a walk-in freezer and cooler, will be installed in the kitchen area, Bob Robertson said. New signage will also be added and the parking lot resealed in the coming weeks, he said.
The Robertsons purchased the Hartsville restaurant on June 12 and reopened it for business on Sept. 18.
They said they thought the Hartsville and Darlington restaurants would be good additions to their group of restaurants, most of which are in the Pee Dee area. They also own two Huddle House restaurants in Florence, one in Lake City, one in Marion, one in Mullins and two in Sumter.
“I thought it was a good store and I thought it would do well,” Bob said of the Hartsville restaurant. “It made sense for us to buy it. We thought it would be good for us, and it has been. We’re just tickled to death with it.”
“The whole inside is new. Everything has been redone in here,” said Debra Hudson, area supervisor for the Robertson’s Huddle House restaurants.
Hudson said business has been brisk even though word that the restaurant is open again has been slow getting out.
“We didn’t advertise it. A lot of our customers don’t even know we’re open now,” she said.
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Hartsville restaurant employs 24 people, Hudson said.
“They (the employees) are doing a wonderful job,” Hudson said. “Business has been tremendous. The customers have just been wonderful.”
Hudson said delivering good customer service will be a priority at the restaurant.
“We want to keep our customers happy because we want them to keep coming back,” she said. “If we ever have a problem, I want to know about it then. I can’t fix it if I don’t know about it.”
