Two people have been arrested in connection with a series of more than 20 Marlboro County burglaries, according to a press release from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.

Dewayne Everett Quick, 31, of 4179 Red Bud Road in McColl, and Kimberly Dawn Brigman, 38, of 16246 Old Wire Road, Laurinburg, N.C., were arrested after deputies responded to a burglary in progress Tuesday at a residence on S.C. 38 near Clio, according to the release.

Brigman was arrested at the scene, while Quick fled into a field behind the residence, according to the release. The sheriff’s office tracking team and bloodhound unit responded and were assisted by McColl and Bennettsville police. The Scotland County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office also had units in the area to assist. A State Law Enforcement Division agent who was in the area for an unrelated matter also provided assistance.

After a 10-minute track, Quick was captured without further incident.

Each of the suspects, who have criminal records, will be charged with more than 20 counts of first-, second- and third-degree burglary, larceny and malicious damage to property, the release said.

“I am asking anybody that has bought anything or received anything from Quick or Brigman to please come forward to the sheriff’s office or McColl Police Department immediately. This investigation will to to another phase now of trying to recover as much merchandise to the victims as possible,” Marlboro County Sheriff’s Lt. Jamie Seales said in the release. “... The investigation shows that these crimes were motivated by drug problems that the suspects have. This has been and will continue to be a joint investigation between Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office and McColl Police Department.”

The suspects are people of interest in several more burglaries reported recently in the same area on S.C. 83.

Investigators determined Quick has been involved in 13 burglaries in Marlboro County that include residences, businesses, vehicles and storage buildings, according to the release. Brigman also will be charged in many of these burglaries.

Quick and others have been involved in burglaries in McColl that have included seven businesses and a residence, according to the release. The other suspects will be arrested as the investigation continues.

Quick and Brigman also will be charged in Dillon County for burglary, according to the release. They also may face charges in Scotland County.

A variety of items, including money, safes, jewelry, coins, tools, guns and gasoline, were stolen during the crime spree that spanned more than a year. Quick and Brigman had been traveling in a white Honda Passport with stolen tags, according to the release.

Marlboro County Sheriff Fred Knight commended Sgt. Terry Lemon’s shift for their work on the case, as well as Deputies Ray Hall and Jeremy Steen for they job they did securing the scene and capturing one of the suspects.

“Their quick response time made the difference in this case,” Knight said in the release. “I would also like to thank all the agencies that assisted ... and once again, our bloodhound program is paying dividends in suppressing criminal activity.”

Quick and Brigman remain in custody at the Marlboro County Detention Center in Bennettsville, where bond will be set this week both in magistrate court and general sessions court because of the charges they face, according to the sheriff’s office.
