COLUMBIA — The 2009 S.C. State Fair opens Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Columbia.
Opening day will feature a special $1 admission price and discounted ride passes, which cost $23 and grant admission to all rides throughout the day.
The regular general admission price at the gate is $8, with special pricing of $5 for seniors over 55, $2 for children ages 2-5, and kids under 2 are free.
The event will feature animal exhibits, games, and a handful of new rides and food items, including a deep-fried bacon concoction called a “Sweet Piggy.”
It’s “a fried piece of gourmet bacon on a stick dipped in chocolate,” S.C. State Fair Manager Gary Goodman said.
“Then we also have what we call a ‘Cornana,’ which is a frozen banana, with a stick in it dipped in cornmeal, fried, and then dipped in chocolate. So if you like fried food, we’ve got everything you want right here.”
Goodman said spectators can also expect some great music.
“We have some super entertainment in the grandstand with artists like TobyMac and Montgomery Gentry and David Cook, the American Idol winner. And we have a $1 concert on Sunday for Charlie Daniels,” he said.
Other performers include Nat and Alex Wolf, Michael W. Smith and Steven Curtis Chapman, and Eric Benet with MaryLiz, with ticket prices ranging from $15 to $25.
The weather for opening day is likely to be gloomy with the forecast for Wednesday calling for steady rain and cool temperatures.
Goodman said the fair will go on as planned despite the weather; however, some rides may be shutdown during periods of heavy rain because of safety concerns.
Organizers had been slowed by rain this week during their preparations for opening day.
The state fair is open nightly until 10 p.m. and will run through Oct. 25.
