The S.C. Bioenergy Summit is returning to Florence on Thursday.
The second annual event is hosted by Clemson University, the S.C. Energy Office and the S.C. Biomass Council and will feature presentations on the impacts of climate change legislations, bioenergy research in South Carolina and emerging biomass industries.
“It’s a really good opportunity for everybody to come together and see where the industry is at,” said Dr. James Frederick of Clemson Pee Dee Research and Education Center.
Bioenergy is derived from organic materials, like wood or plant and animal waste, known as biomass. Bioenergy can be used to produce heat, generate electricity and aid in the production of biofuels.
Biomass is a form of renewable energy that has been projected to become the most widely used form of its kind in the southeastern USA, with one of the forefronts being in South Carolina.
Farmers of biomass crops, chemists and workers for private energy firms will be in attendance, Frederick said.
“There’s going to be a diversity of people at the summit. Average Joe can learn quite a bit,” he said.
The event runs from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Clemson Pee Dee Research and Education Center in Florence.
