COLUMBIA – Mark Keel, Director of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety issued the following statement Wednesday in connection with a traffic stop involving a member of the governor's security detail.
"I have reviewed the video recording of the traffic stop that occurred at approximately 3:30 PM, October 6, 2009 on Interstate 385," Keel said Wednesday.
"The details are as seen on the tape: Lance Cpl. R. S. Salter of Troop 2 clocked a speeding vehicle, a dark colored Crown Victoria with tinted windows, and proceeded to make the traffic stop near the two-mile marker.
"An individual, who exited the Crown Victoria and approached Salter, indentified himself as a State Law Enforcement Division agent. When asked why he was speeding, the agent said he was transporting the Governor.
"Trooper Salter approached the Crown Victoria and found the Governor to be a passenger in the vehicle.
"Trooper Salter then returned to his vehicle without issuing the SLED agent a speeding citation."
Keel said as a result of his review of the incident, speeding charges will be filed against the SLED agent.
