Following two back-to-back losses against Sumter and Carolina Forest, the Hartsville Lady Red Foxes varsity volleyball team fought off the West Florence Knights for a win on Tuesday night. The Foxes record improves to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in region.
After a close first game, 28-26, the Foxes lost the second game 17-25. In game 3, Hartsville squeaked by 25-21. The Foxes rallied in game 4 posting 9 unanswered points to start. The final score was 25-12 Hartsville.
“We made a lot of key errors,” said West Florence Coach Denise Carter. “Our setters were off today. You know that makes a huge difference.”
The loss gives West Florence a region record of 1-4 and an overall record of 5-5.
“As a whole, as a team, we’re getting there. We’ve been doing some teambuilding stuff in practice,” said Hartsville Coach Amber Ortolano. “So they can trust each other out on the court.”
“They need to understand volleyball is not just skill. It has to do with mental ability as well,” said Ortolano. “They’re just not making that connection sometimes.”
There are only two regular season games left: 6 p.m. Tuesday at Sumter and 6 p.m. Oct. 19 against Carolina Forest at home.
Ortolano expects the team will make the playoffs.
