An Open Classic Car Show sponsored by the Central Carolina Corvair Club will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 at Auddie Brown Chevrolet in Darlington.
It’s an open show for all classic cars. Spectators are welcome. There is no admission charge.
Seventy-two awards will be given in 23 classes at the show. Awards will be given to the first three cars in each class.
Additionally, dozens of door prizes will be given to entrants.
Although the show will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvair, only four of the 23 classes will be for Corvairs.
All years and makes of classic cars are invited to participate. But to qualify as a classic car in this show, entries must have been built before 1985.
“We want to recognize the engineering advances Chevrolet made with the Corvair,” said Jerry Brown, president of the Central Carolina Corvair Club. “Although the Corvair was only made between 1960 and 1969, it was the first rear-engined American-made car. It was supposed to be America’s answer to the German Porche.”
Four Corvairs belonging to club members will be on display in the Auddie Brown showroom the week before the show.
“We have some great door prizes,” show chairman Bob Bloodworth said. “Among them is a three-day, two-night vacation for two in an oceanfront condo at Sea Mist Resort in Myrtle Beach.”
Bloodworth said Pepsi-Cola is providing its Pepsi wagon for the club to sell drinks. And KJ’s IGA Supermarket on Pamplico Highway is providing hot dogs to sell.
“It’s going to be a carnival-like atmosphere,” he said.
Auddie Brown Chevrolet is located at the intersection of U.S. 52 and U.S. 52 Bypass near Darlington.
