Students at Coastal Carolina University spent the day and night raising awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence.
Tuesday afternoon a "Take Back the Day" program was held on Prince Lawn and featured informational tables as well as standing figures from the silent witness program. The figures represented individuals who lost their lives to domestic violence. Chris Donevant-Hanes with CCU’s Counseling Services said, "Here on Coastal’s campus we do try to do a lot of activities and events to keep the awareness present throughout the year on our campus. Our students are always faced with making tough choices we try to do outreach opportunities such as this event to bring it to the students."
Tuesday night, a “Take Back the Night” march across campus was held to also raise awareness. Dozens of people crowded underneath the clock at Spadoni Park to hear facts and figures about violence and sexual assault from university staff.
Haven Hart, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, told the group that according to the Centers for Disease Control, one in four University students will likely be the victim of violence.
And it is statistics like that that organizers said is one of the reasons they need to raise awareness about sexual assault and violence, especially on a college campus. "We know that the statistics are very under reported and we want people to know that we're here, we take this very seriously and that we want people to know that we have their backs." Sean Pierce with CCU’s Counseling Services said.
More than one hundred people marched through campus blowing whistles, waving glow sticks and chanting. Pierce said by marching, speaking out, and making noise, it lets people know they will not be silent about violence or sexual assault.
