The 27th Sweet Potato Festival brings vendors, crafts, music, magicians, balloon release, antique/classic car show and anything sweet potato to town. More than 100 vendors will display crafts, jewelry, furniture, food, baked goods and other items at the festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the Public Square in downtown Darlington. The event is sponsored annually by the Pilot Club of Darlington.
It is a family oriented event rich with the smell of funnel cakes, sweet potatoes and more, the sounds of local entertainment and the sights of children and adults having fun. There will be face painting, climbing wall, fire safety for the children.
The schedule of events begins at 9 a.m. with the antique car show on Cashua Street; 10 a.m. opening ceremony and balloon release; 10:20 Clay Brown; 10:50 Patsy Hathcock Dancers; 11:15 Larry Flowers, also at Cashua Street Curtis Boyd’s Karate teams perform; 11:45 Brenda Cranford Dancers; 12:15 p.m. Ashlyn Bazen; 12:35 Leesa Hudson; 1:15 Chuck Miller; 1:45 Troy Bunch/T-Roy Entertainment Gospel Singer; 2:15 Puppets-Brain Minders, Pilot Club of Darlington; 2:35 Niki Chavis School of Dance Arts; and at 3 Kendall Standish Singers.
The Sweet Potato Festival salutes the role the sweet potato plays in the economy of the Pee Dee. Rich in nutrients and fiber, the sweet potato rivals tobacco as one of South Carolina’s key crops.
