Leon Gregg operated his trucking business out of his Hartsville home for six and a half years.

“As the business started growing, we had a lot of drivers in and out of the house,” said Gregg, the president, CEO and principal owner of Gregg Trucking LLC. “My wife got tired of that. So we had to find another place.”

On Thursday, Gregg celebrated the grand opening of the trucking company’s first real corporate headquarters office at 1109 S. Fifth St. in Central Plaza of Hartsville next to the old Wal-Mart building.

Representatives from the City of Hartsville, the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, the business community and a contingent from Gregg’s biggest customer, Sonoco were on hand for the event.

Gregg said 95 percent of the outward bound freight his trucks haul leaving Hartsville is through Sonoco.

The company specializes in hauling dry freight, he said.

“We cover 24 states as far west as Texas and as far north as New Jersey,” Gregg said.

Gregg’s company operates a fleet of eight trucks and employs 11 people.

He said the move to the plaza office will help his company grow and add to its fleet and its labor force.

“We love trucks. We love what we do,” he said. “If it will fit and it’s not illegal, we’ll haul it.”

Gregg’s company has hauled freight for Sonoco for nearly three years, and Sonoco representatives at Thursday’s opening said his company does a good job for them.
Gregg has worked in the trucking industry for 15 years.

A Darlington native, he moved to Hartsville in 1992. His wife, Rosa, is originally from Hartsville.

“We think Hartsville is a great town,” Gregg said.

“We wanted to get some office space to serve as our headquarters here in Hartsville, and we want to make this business grow.”

He said he believes the potential for growth is out there. And the labor force is plentiful, he added.

“I get calls every day from out-of-work drivers all over the country looking for jobs,” he said.
