COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of five people being killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, Oct. 4, at midnight.
As of Oct. 4, 681 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared with 703 highway deaths in this same time period in 2008.
Of the 518 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2009, 306 were not wearing seat belts. There have been 26 fatal collisions where the use of seat belts is unknown.
Through midnight Oct. 4, 63 pedestrians, 75 motorcyclists and 10 bicyclists have died on state roads and highways. The remaining fatalities are the result of collisions involving an assortment of vehicles such as mopeds or tractors.
