FLORENCE – A three-year-old child was thrown from the car in which it was riding during an early morning crash at the intersection of Evans and North Cashua Streets in Florence.
According to a Florence Police official, the car, a 2007 Mercury Marquis, was traveling north on Cashua Street at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the car and clipped a utility pole. The car flipped several times and landed on its roof, the official said.
The child, identified by Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines as the suspect's son, was thrown about 25 feet from the car, officials said. The child was taken to a Florence medical center where he is listed in critical condition, Raines said..
Witnesses told police the car’s driver got out of the wreck and fled. The driver was taken into custody about eight blocks away, officials said.
The car’s driver, Douglas Everet Washington, 28, of 506 Anson Street, Florence, according to the Florence County Sheriff's Office booking site, was charged with:
- DUS habitual offender
- Traffic / hit and run, duties of driver involved in accident with minor personal injury
- Child / child endangerment, commit certain vehicular offenses w/ minor in vehicle (enhance-half max penalty)
- DUS / driving under suspension, license not suspended for dui - 3rd or sub. Offense
- DUS / felony driving under the influence, great bodily injury results
- Weapons / unlawful carrying of pistol
- RSG / receiving stolen goods, value less than $1,000
