COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A plan to allow working professionals to teach in schools part-time has won preliminary approval in South Carolina.

The State reported Monday that the teacher adjunct program would allow working professionals to be certified to teach part-time in public schools.

The state Board of Education has given the idea preliminary approval. If it approves it again, it would go to lawmakers.

Assistant education superintendent Mark Bounds says officials hope the program will help rural schools attract talent, especially in math and science.

Officials hope the program would attract people like engineers to teach in addition to their full-time jobs.

Professionals with a degree in their subject area who have worked at least five of the past 10 years in the field could qualify as adjunct teachers.
