HEMINGWAY— During the holiday season many government officials call on their constituency to be charitable to those less fortunate, but how many are found hauling a truck load of produce for free distribution?
Well, at least one.
W.B. Wilson, county councilman for Williamsburg’s District 2, gave away more than 50 of his homegrown collard greens to senior citizens in the Hemingway area last week. The councilman made several stops throughout his district, including one to the J.J. Mitcheom Center and seniors there, and another to seniors and staff at the New Mt. Carmel Adult Day Care at Mt. Carmel Church.
“I was doing this for the last ten years,” Wilson said. “I count this a real blessing because so many people in out neighborhoods have endured, and God gave me the strength and the health… to help the seniors out.”
Greeted by smiles and laughter at both of his stops, the councilman bantered with staff and their clients as he unloaded his harvest from the bed of his white Chevrolet pickup. The collards were placed in individual bags for the senior’s enjoyment at the Mitcheom Center, while those at Mt. Carmel spread the bounty across a table in the common area for all to see.
Margret Moore, manager for the seniors at J.J. Mitcheom, and Wessie Brown, director of Mt. Carmel, both expressed their thanks to Wilson as he passed out the greens, shook hands and posed for pictures.
Wilson said he would be making more deliveries between Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as arranging individual citizens and local groups to pick up the delicious leafy treats at his home. Before he is done, the councilman expects to distribute at least 500 collard greens.
Wilson also commented on the importance as a member of the local community to utilize personal talents and strengths to help others whenever possible.
“You must continue to give to your community,” he said.
