Florence School District 1 says they need more money to build new schools and to do away with or reduce portable classrooms. By the way, what is so terrible about portable classrooms? It seems to me if the number of children going to school is going up then so is the tax base. If that is the case additional money is coming in to do this without added burden on taxpayers. Does that sound reasonable? What this tells me is either they are being, what’s that new catch word, disingenuous, or the tax base isn’t going up, but the demand for more money is. Why is that? The population is growing in Florence, right? If a person lives in a rental property rather than an owned property, the landlord pays a higher tax rate because they don’t live there, much higher. Look at your tax notice and also see that your solid waste fee jumped, too. That has to be taken into account when the rental rate is established. So don’t tell me renters don’t pay property tax because they most certainly do or the landlord is an idiot. So now where is the problem? People use the term fixed income a lot and I know what they are talking about. Me and a lot of other people have a different problem, an uncertain income. In my case I primarily work on commission. As a result of the lousy economy I will make a good bit less this year than last year, but I am fortunate, I have a job. Many people either don’t have a job or are working for a lot less than they normally do. I hope somebody will explain some of these things to us. I wish this was the only way taxes are going up, but that is another topic.
