On behalf of the American Legion Wilbur Jones Post No. 73 of Lake City and the many veterans in our area, I wish to extend a sincere appreciation to the city of Lake City and to Lake City High School for making our recent Veteran’s Day program an outstanding success.
The former National Guard Armory provided an excellent location to hold this solemn and memorable service, especially because the weather was not favorable for being outside. Ms. Cynthia Mallette, the director of Lake City’s Parks and Recreation Department, and her staff provided valuable assistance in getting the area prepared for the program. The City of Lake City, especially Mr. Marion Lowder, also provided the Dr. Ronald McNair Memorial Park as a location where the American Legion recently held a flag retirement service.
The Veteran’s Day Program on Nov. 11 revolved around Lake City High School’s excellent participation by the JROTC color guard, under the guidance of Sgt. Manning; the band, under the direction of Ms. Susan Cox; and the Ensemble, under the leadership of Ms. Faith Godwin.
The military precision of the color guard and the excellent selection of music performed by the band and Ensemble were the essence of the program and certainly contributed to the spirit of remembrance for which the Veteran’s Day Program is about. The playing of “Taps” by Miss Ashley Redden, a student trumpeter in the Band, added a degree of emotion to the many attendees and veterans who have paid the “ultimate sacrifice” to protect the liberties that we enjoy.
Lake City is truly blessed to have the dedication of the municipal staff and high school teachers, plus the talent of our local youth. A special “thank you” to all who helped in making the Veteran’s Day program of 2009 a monumental success. I am already looking forward to next year.
