Hundreds of people braved a chilly morning and lined up on the square in downtown Darlington on Tuesday to take part in an annual free turkey giveaway, .
The giveaway kicked off at 7 a.m. and, within an hour, all of the nearly 1,000 available turkeys were distributed.
The city of Darlington and a group of local businesses teamed up to sponsor the event, which also is sponsored in part by the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce and Eads Chiropractic.
Volunteers also handed out canned goods and bottled soft drinks.
The tough economic times have led many people to cut back on their holiday meals and the giveaway provided a much-needed break for the families who benefited.
